I have a friend who I run a small business (not our day jobs) with bringing in parts for minis from Japan. The market for these after market items is very small here in the USA, just a handful of guys really who are into it. Timing differs for us too, on average though i say its about a month to receive things. Some items take longer cause some shops are slow.

Not CT70 for your futur project Question

I do have a CT70 frame hanging up and some really cool plans but i have two other projects to finish first.

My current project that im working on is a 1969 Z50A k1 US model (hardtail). Im in the process of making Carbon fenders and a carbon tank for it. Ive posted about it on other forums. I'm not sure weather to just copy the links or repost the thread on here.

For now here are some of the links to my postings about it.

My other project thats on the back burner and will start once I'm done with the hardtail is a 1972 CF70 (Chaly). I'm pretty sure I'm going to really enjoy building this one up as they are seriously rear here in the states. They were never sold in North America and im not even sure how it got here. I pretty much stumbled on to it by chance.

hi
carbon fiber parts are pretty difficult to make for non professionals, the molding process is more complicated than ordinary fiberglass stuff
you need owens with constant temp, vacuum pumps etc...
I worked there for 7 years, well I should say I lost 7 years working there, it's a corsican co specialized in composite parts for aircraft
http://www.cca.fr/
I've planned to make simples parts too, I gotta ask this to one of my relatives who owns all the stuff to make them
there's also an important problem in europe, it's actually THE MAIN problem, it's possible to make all the hi-tech parts you want here, carbon, titanium etc... but ppl are too poor to afford them therefore it's completely uninteresting to make molds and stuff for parts that will be impossible to sell
cheers brice4

I find it to be a very common miss conception that baking a piece of carbon layup is needed in all carbon fiber, not all resins need to be baked to setup. True that most of the aerospace and many other high strength applications use varying high temp resins with prepraig cuts. But for 80% of any moto related applications that process is completely unneeded. WestSystems resins do just fine in normal temps.

I do use vaccum bagging in a lot of cases to lighten the piece as well as ensure zero lifting in complex shaped pieces. But even that is not necessary, It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Keep in mind this is all just a hobby for me, I have no intention on selling anything, so its not being made in any sort of high level production process.

hi
the quality or the resin is very important, I think it's safer to use phenolic one even if you'll have to put the parts in a owen to mold them
let me know about your carbon fiber fuel tank, I would use mixed kevlar/carbon fiber though to increase resistance against shocks
how many parts do you use to build your tank? I can see the bottom on the pic, I guess there's a top and a bottom just like the stock steel tank
cheers brice4

Well with the recent monkey tank we just made the top for thats pretty much what we did. We knew we were going to paint the top of the tank and other areas of the tank so we didn't mind what it looked like in those areas. We ended up using a combination of glass carbon and kevlar. the tank was at the minimum 5 layers, and up to 7 in some other areas.

Hello from San Francisco California USA Tank-top2

im laying up my hardtail tank today and plan to do a full carbon top with 2 by 2 twil. due to the size and shape im sure it will be strong enough with out the kevlar. If im wrong i can always go back and add the kevlar on the inside once its out of the mold.

have you tested the reaction of the resin with fuel? fuel tanks used in aircrafts are made with kevlar with phenolic resin

The tank will be coated on the inside with por15, and UV cleared on the outside.
